What Is a Pink Slip in NSW?

A pink slip, officially called an eSafety Check or NSW Safety Inspection, is the inspection that confirms a vehicle meets minimum safety standards. In NSW it’s generally required each year to renew registration on vehicles over 5 years old.

You may hear it called:

Pink slip
Pinky
eSafety Check

They all refer to the same legal inspection.

What a Pink Slip Actually Means (And What It Doesn’t)

A NSW pink slip, officially called an eSafety Check, is a legal compliance check. It confirms that, on the day of inspection, the vehicle meets the minimum safety standards required by Transport for NSW.

It is required when:
Renewing registration on a vehicle over 5 years old
Re-registering a lapsed or expired registration
Transport for NSW otherwise requires a safety inspection

It is not:
A mechanical service
A guarantee of future reliability
A full vehicle condition report

Understanding this upfront avoids unrealistic expectations and unnecessary stress.

NSW Pink Slip FAQ's

What is a NSW Pink Slip?

A Pink Slip is a Safety Inspection Report. It is required for most light vehicles over 5 years old before you can renew your NSW registration. The inspection checks that your vehicle meets required road safety standards.

  • Vehicle Age: Required annually once your vehicle is more than 5 years old (calculated from the date of first registration, not the model year).
  • Registration Renewal: It must be completed before you can renew. Your renewal notice from Service NSW will explicitly state if an inspection is required.
  1. It checks important safety components to determine if the vehicle is safe for NSW roads, including:
    • Brakes
    • Steering and suspension
    • Tyres and lights
    • Other safety-related items

Once carried out, your Pink Slip is valid for 6 months. You must renew your registration within this timeframe for the report to be accepted.

  1. If defects are found, Roadworthy.me will explain what is wrong and what is required to address the defect. Once the required repairs are completed by  your choice of repairer the vehicle must then be reinspected within 14 days and the Pink slip will be issued.
  2.

Yes. Roadworthy.me is authorised to undertake mobile safety inspections within Tweed Heads and surrounding areas (including Terranora, Bilambil, Banora Point, Fingal Head, Kingscliff, and surrounds). The inspection area must be safe, accessible, and have a suitable hard, level surface.

No. You do not need to be present for a mobile safety inspection, provided you give Roadworthy.me suitable access to the vehicle and arrangements have been made beforehand.

No. If you are transferring a vehicle with current NSW registration, you do not need a Pink Slip simply because ownership is changing. A Pink Slip is only required if the registration itself is due for renewal.

Once your vehicle passes, Roadworthy.me will send the results to Transport for NSW electronically, allowing you to renew your registration online instantly.
