If your rego renewal notice has just landed and it mentions a safety inspection, you’re not alone in wondering what it means. Here’s a plain-English guide to NSW pink slips: who needs one, when, and how to get it sorted without losing half a day.
The Quick Answer
Most cars, 4WDs, motorbikes, caravans and trailers in NSW need a pink slip every year once they’re more than 5 years old. You can’t renew your rego until the inspection is passed and lodged with Transport for NSW.
The official name is a safety inspection report, or eSafety check. Most people still call it a pink slip or a “pinky”.
When You Need a Pink Slip
- Your vehicle is more than 5 years old. The 5 years is counted from the build date on your vehicle’s compliance plate, not the model year.
- You’re renewing your NSW rego. Your renewal notice from Service NSW will say whether an inspection is required. If it does, you need one before you can pay.
- Every year after that. Once a vehicle passes the 5-year mark, you’ll usually need a new pink slip each time you renew.
When You Don’t Need One
- Your vehicle is 5 years old or newer.
- You’re simply transferring ownership. If a car has current NSW rego, you don’t need a pink slip just because it’s being sold. You only need one when the rego itself is due for renewal.
- Your renewal notice says no inspection is required. Always check the notice first.

How Long Does a Pink Slip Last?
A pink slip for a light vehicle is valid for 6 months. You need to renew your rego within that time, or you’ll need another inspection.
That means you don’t have to wait until the last week. Getting it done a few weeks early gives you time to fix anything that comes up, without your rego running out.

Live Near the Border? A QLD Certificate Won’t Do
This catches a lot of people in Tweed Heads, Banora Point and Terranora. If your car is registered in NSW, Transport for NSW only accepts an interstate inspection report if you’re more than 50 km from the NSW border.
So if you live on the Tweed side and your rego is NSW, you need a NSW pink slip from an Authorised Inspection Station. A Queensland safety certificate from the Gold Coast won’t be accepted for your renewal.
We’re authorised for both, so we can tell you straight away which one you need.
What Happens If Your Vehicle Fails?
A fail is usually a small fix, such as a worn tyre, a blown globe or a leaking seal. We’ll show you exactly what needs attention and why. Get the repairs done by any mechanic you like, and your re-inspection is free within 14 days.

Pink Slip, Blue Slip, Green Slip: What’s the Difference?
- Pink slip: the yearly safety check for a vehicle that’s already registered in NSW.
- Blue slip: a more detailed inspection for a vehicle that isn’t currently registered in NSW, such as one coming from interstate or one whose rego has lapsed.
- Green slip: your compulsory third party (CTP) insurance. You need it for every rego renewal, whatever your vehicle’s age.
